The Tiny Egg

The Butterfly Journey

Maya discovered tiny white eggs on a milkweed leaf in her garden. She watched carefully each day as one egg began to change. Soon, a small green caterpillar emerged, munching hungrily on the leaf. 'Hello, little one,' Maya whispered, 'I'm going to watch you grow.'
1
The caterpillar grew bigger and bigger, its black, yellow, and white stripes becoming more vibrant. Maya brought fresh milkweed leaves every morning, amazed at how much the tiny creature could eat. 'You're changing so fast,' she said, noticing the caterpillar slowing down after two weeks. One day, the caterpillar climbed to the top of the jar and hung upside down in a J-shape.
2
The caterpillar's skin split open to reveal a beautiful green chrysalis with golden dots. 'Now we wait,' Maya's mother explained, 'just like sometimes we have to be patient for good things.' Maya checked the chrysalis every day, wondering what was happening inside. After ten days, the green shell became transparent, revealing orange and black wings folded inside.
3
The chrysalis cracked open and a monarch butterfly emerged, its wings wet and crumpled. Maya watched in awe as the butterfly pumped fluid into its wings until they were strong and ready. 'You're free to go now,' Maya said as she released the butterfly in her garden. She smiled knowing her butterfly friend would travel thousands of miles to Mexico, just like she would face her own big journeys someday.
