The Glowing Carrot

The Rabbit Who Swallowed the Sun

In the meadow of Whiskerwick, rabbits didn't just predict the weather—they controlled it. Clover, a young gray rabbit with an unfortunate habit of eating first and thinking later, was the newest weather apprentice. "Your job today is simple," said Elder Sage, the ancient white rabbit who led the Weather Council. "Just watch the sun while we prepare for the Summer Solstice ceremony." Clover nodded eagerly, his long ears flopping as he hopped to his post. The sun hung low that morning, glowing orange and round, looking remarkably like a perfect carrot. Clover's stomach grumbled as he stared at it, wondering why no one had ever mentioned how delicious the sun looked.
1
"Just one nibble," Clover whispered to himself, stretching his paws toward the glowing orb. With a quick hop and a gulp, Clover swallowed what he thought was a magical carrot. Warmth spread through his belly, and his fur began to glow with golden light. "That was delicious!" he exclaimed, before noticing the sky darkening rapidly around him. Stars appeared though it was morning, and a chill wind swept across the meadow. "CLOVER!" Elder Sage's voice boomed across the field. "What have you done? You've eaten the SUN!"
2
The meadow erupted into chaos as rabbits hopped frantically in all directions. "Without the sun, the world will freeze!" cried a mother rabbit, clutching her babies close. Elder Sage approached Clover, who was now glowing like a nightlight. "The sun is inside you, but it cannot stay there," Sage explained gravely. "Already, frost giants from the Northern Mountains will sense the darkness and begin their march south." Clover's ears drooped in shame as he watched ice crystals forming on the grass. "Can I just... spit it back up?" he asked hopefully. "If only it were that simple," sighed Sage. "You must journey to the Ancient Burrow and follow the Path of Digestion Reversal."
3
"The path has three challenges," Elder Sage explained, drawing a map in the dirt with his paw. "First, you must cross the Carnivorous Cornfield that separates our realm from the Ancient Burrow." Clover gulped nervously, his glow flickering with fear. "Second, beware the Mole Mafia in the tunnels beneath—they'll try to trick you with false solutions." Sage's whiskers twitched anxiously as distant howls echoed from the mountains. "Finally, you must reach the Burrow before the Moon Queen completes her ritual at midnight—she's waited centuries for the sun to disappear." Clover nodded, determination replacing his fear. "I made this mistake, and I'll fix it," he promised, hopping toward the edge of the meadow as the first snowflakes began to fall.
4
The cornfield loomed before Clover, tall stalks swaying despite the lack of wind. "Hello?" Clover called nervously, his body's glow illuminating the entrance to the field. A stalk bent down suddenly, revealing a corn ear with rows of teeth instead of kernels. "Fresh rabbit!" it hissed, snapping at Clover's ears. Clover dodged and darted between the stalks, his heart pounding as more cornstalks bent to bite him. "Wait!" called a friendly voice from above. "Up here, glowing bunny!" Clover looked up to see a scarecrow waving from her post. "I'm Cornelia, and I can help you through if you'll light my path with your glow."
5
"The corn only attacks what it can't see clearly," Cornelia explained as she climbed down from her post. She was a patchwork scarecrow with button eyes and a stitched smile, moving with surprising grace. "Your glow actually confuses them—they've never seen daylight in here." Clover hopped alongside Cornelia, concentrating on making his glow brighter. The cornstalks hissed but recoiled from the light, creating a path through the field. "Why are you helping me?" Clover asked as they navigated through the maze of hungry plants. "Because I've been watching the sky for fifty years," Cornelia replied sadly. "And I've never seen it without the sun—it's just not right."
6
Beyond the cornfield, Clover and Cornelia found the entrance to the underground tunnels. "This is where we part ways," Cornelia said, adjusting her straw hat. "Scarecrows don't do well underground—too damp for my stuffing." Clover thanked her and ventured into the dark tunnel, his glow revealing a bustling underground market run entirely by moles in tiny business suits. "Sun fragments! Get your sun fragments here!" called a particularly sleek mole with a gold tooth. "Guaranteed to replace the missing sun!" Moles swarmed around Clover, attracted by his glow, offering bottles of yellow liquid and glowing rocks. "Special price for you, rabbit," whispered the gold-toothed mole, introducing himself as Digger. "Since you're the one who ate the real thing."
7
"How do you know I ate the sun?" Clover asked suspiciously, backing away from Digger and his gang. Digger adjusted his tiny pinstriped suit and grinned. "News travels fast underground, especially profitable news." He held up a glowing yellow marble. "This is a concentrated sun seed—swallow it, and it'll attract the sun inside you, pulling it right out." Clover almost reached for it before noticing other rabbits in the market, all glowing faintly and looking sickly. "What happened to them?" he demanded. "Satisfied customers," Digger claimed, but his shifty eyes told another story. "They bought our sun fragments to cure their winter colds—the glow is a sign it's working!"
8
One of the sickly rabbits approached Clover, her glow pulsing weakly. "Don't listen to him," she whispered. "They're selling radioactive cave moss—it makes you glow but slowly makes you sick." Digger's whiskers twitched angrily as he signaled to his mole guards. "Get them both!" he ordered as the market erupted into chaos. Clover dodged between market stalls, knocking over bottles of fake sun essence. "The Ancient Burrow—where is it?" Clover shouted to the sickly rabbit as they fled. "Through the crystal cavern," she gasped, pointing to a narrow tunnel. "But hurry—I can feel the frost giants getting closer, and the Moon Queen's power grows with every minute of darkness."
9
The crystal cavern sparkled with Clover's reflected light, creating a dazzling display of miniature suns across every surface. "Beautiful," Clover whispered, momentarily forgetting his quest. A deep rumble shook the cavern, sending crystals tinkling to the ground. "Frost giants," Clover realized, his ears detecting their heavy footsteps above. The temperature dropped rapidly, ice forming along the cavern walls. At the far end of the cavern stood an ancient stone doorway carved with rabbit symbols—the entrance to the Ancient Burrow. As Clover approached, the stone door began to glow in response to the sun's energy inside him. "Almost there," he encouraged himself, placing a paw on the cold stone. "I just hope I'm not too late."
10
The stone door swung open to reveal a circular chamber with a domed ceiling painted to resemble the sky. In the center stood a pedestal with a golden bowl filled with glowing liquid. "The Reversal Potion," Clover realized, recognizing it from Elder Sage's description. As he hopped toward it, a silver light filled the chamber. "Well, well, what have we here?" came a melodious voice that somehow felt as cold as ice. The Moon Queen materialized before him, her fur silvery-white and her eyes the color of eclipses. "The little rabbit who gave me the greatest gift of all—eternal night." She smiled, revealing teeth that gleamed like stars. "I've waited centuries for some fool to remove the sun from the sky."
11
"The world needs balance," Clover argued, inching toward the golden bowl. "Without the sun, everything will freeze." The Moon Queen laughed, a sound like icicles breaking. "My frost giants are already claiming the meadows—soon all will worship the night!" Outside, the ground shook with giant footsteps. In a desperate leap, Clover dove past the Moon Queen and gulped down the Reversal Potion. His stomach burned and glowed brighter than ever. "No!" screamed the Moon Queen as Clover felt the sun rising up his throat. With an enormous belch that shook the Ancient Burrow, Clover sent the sun shooting upward through a skylight in the dome. The chamber filled with blinding light as the Moon Queen shrieked and dissolved into silver mist. Above, the sun reclaimed its rightful place in the sky, melting the frost and sending the giants retreating to their mountains.
