Chad’s predicament could keep the story humorous, with townspeople misunderstanding or jumping to conclusions, but each interaction could introduce and define a different elicitation technique for the child reader.

Sally looked up and saw the fisherman trying to reel in the fish. Sally thought for a moment, “why don’t you ask him to let you go?” she said. “Well I never thought of that,” remarked the fish. So the fish got up all of its might, jumped out of the water and yelled, “LET ME GO! Please!”, he said please because he was a polite fish after all. The fisherman didn’t move, he just kept trying to reel the fish in. “Well, what did he say?” asked Sally. “He doesn’t speak fish” replied the fish. Sally thought maybe she could try to talk to the fisherman. She flew over to him and said “excuse me, sir, but could you please let my friend the fish go?” But the fisherman only heard “caw, caw, caw caaaw, caw caw.” Sally flew back to the fish. The fish asked, “is he going to let me go?” “No” Sally replied, “he doesn’t speak seagull.” Just then a sea otter swam up, he had heard them talking and was wondering what the commotion was all about. The sea otter asked the fish, “what’s going on over here?”

Miko the Meerkat and Lou the lizard live in the hot and dry Kalahari Desert. Miko the Meerkat and Lou the Lizard in the vast Kalahari Desert. Miko and Lou are best friends and do everything together! Miko is a bright, lively and friendly meerkat. He loves popping and looking out of burrows to explore the Kalahari. Miko likes moving from place to place and can’t stay still! Lou is a clever lizard; she loves to imagine the stars in the sky so much that she sometimes forgets to listen in class. Miko and Lou are different from their friends because they both have ADHD Miko struggled to stay still in class. He was always digging burrows and often got distracted during his How to Spot a Predator class. Lou also struggled in class. She couldn’t focus on her Sun Safety class because she was easily distracted by the clouds in the sky and often forgot to take down her homework.After visiting Dr Wild the Wildebeest, Miko and Lou learnt to do things that would help them to manage their ADHD. Although Miko and Lou struggled in class, their ADHD is now an advantage!Miko became the captain of the sand surfing team and had the fastest record in the desert! Miko was also top of his insect tracking class and created the first ever pair of insect spy goggles that could see different insect tracks and tell you what type of insect you are looking at!Lou enjoyed stargazing so much that she was top of the class for astronomy and could name every constellationEven though Miko and Lou had some tough times with their ADHD, they both learnt cool tricks to help them feel better and do their best. They have support from their parents, teachers and classmates. But the best part was that they could count on each other! Miko and Lou learnt how to handle their ADHD together and were always there to help each other when things got tough.

Donovan is an energetic, curious kid who loves fun and adventure. With ADHD, he experiences excitement and sensory moments more intensely, expressing it by flapping his hands and jumping up and down. It’s his unique way of showing emotions. Donovan is kind, thoughtful, and loves playing with his friends at school. Sometimes, his excitement grows too big, and he feels overwhelmed. That’s when he uses his Superhero Calm Down technique—breathing like a superhero to regain control. Though he sometimes struggles with focus, Donovan’s imagination is his greatest strength. He often dreams of being a superhero, able to calm any storm. His superpowers include his big heart, ability to make friends easily, and unstoppable spirit. He teaches others it’s okay to be different. Donovan’s teacher, Ms. Carter, is one of his biggest supporters. She encourages him to embrace who he is and helps him learn new coping strategies, helping him navigate his big feelings.
